Coasteering — A Brief History

Our 2000 history of coasteering has been re-published. The article covers late-19th Century origins to the major resurgence from the 1960s onwards, including the recognition of North Pembrokeshire as one of the premier coasteering locations in the UK.

Canmol: The CIM Wales Marketing Awards 2009

The winners of Canmol, the Chartered Institute of Marketing Wales Marketing Awards, were announced at the Award Ceremony held at the Park Plaza Hotel, Cardiff, on the evening of October 15. The five winners were chosen from a shortlist of 15, selected from almost 50 entries, after an intensive process that presented the judges with some difficult decisions due to the generally high quality of the submissions. The judging panel, under the chairmanship of Jonathan Deacon of Newport Business School and Chair of the CIM Wales Board, comprised: Barrie Foster, Dan Langford, Ian Beattie, James Horsham, Julian Leybourne, Martin Evans, Nick Alexander, Paula Dauncey, Sue Cole, Terrie Cousins, Alan Mumby, Joanna Swash and Peter Lewis.

And the Winners Are:

Catnic (Corus UK)

Fully integrated re-launch of the Catnic lintel range, including on-line information and downloads, point-of-sale material, dealer support and technical literature, all at a high standard of presentation. Segmentation of promotional material takes into account the differing needs and technical knowledge of specifiers, stockists and end users.

Green Thumb Ltd

Eye-catching cartoon characters and animations used to support its lawn care franchise and generate consumer enquiries. The company used press and TV advertising, social networking and re-designed livery to drive traffic to its web site, with the result that franchisees have reported substantial increases in enquiries. A very clear rationale supported by excellent performance measurement.

Princes Gate Spring Water

A cohesive re-branding and promotional strategy supported by clear identification of target markets and distribution channels. Promotion positions the product generally for a younger mid-range socio-economic, while new packaging design is intended to raise positioning for catering outlets.

South Wales Police

An innovative ‘Citizen Focus’ training and engagement initiative designed to raise awareness amongst officers of the need to place the ‘customer’ first. Seminars helped officers develop new communication skills and recognise their potential as ambassadors for local policing. The initiative is carried through by proactive mechanisms which include surgeries and the OurBobby web site.

Wrexham County Borough Council

For its ‘Happy Days’ library promotion campaign, delivered on behalf of the Welsh Assembly Government. Well thought out, well researched and well delivered. Internal mechanisms, market segmentation and consumer promotion fully considered, with impressive use of a marketing mix that included PR, events, celebrity endorsement and engagement mechanisms, including a well organised web presence.

Personal Special Mentions

The majority of entries, and all of the shortlisted entries, were noteworthy in one or more respects. But with only five awards to play for, many submissions were doomed to fail at the finishing line. This particular judge feels that the following were deserving of special mention for specific elements of their Canmol entries.

Major Events Unit (Welsh Assembly Government)

A high profile public relations initiative that used humour and imagination to counter criticism of the decision to host the first Ashes Test in 2009 at the SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff. The result was a ‘welcome’ campaign that spoke directly to English and Australian visitors and generated a substantial amount of sympathetic media coverage. Based around the message ‘Wales says G’Dai’, the street poster campaign included a range of similar strap lines, including ‘Lions and Kangaroos. Welcome to the Dragons’ Den’.

Nomad Wheelchairs

Sound and well integrated marketing campaign from a company that began trading in 2006. Especially notable for photography, typography and overall graphic design, where a minimalist approach perfectly reflects the clean and modern design of the product.

Gremline — The General Aviation Flight Safety Digest

Gremline continues to serve the General Aviation community with monthly articles on flight safety matters. Recent articles include a contribution from Professor Helen Muir, Professor of Aerospace Psychology and Head of Human Factors Group at Cranfield University College of Aeronautics. ‘The Emergence of Human Factors’ examines growing awareness of the role of human factors in aviation safety over the past 60 years. Our September article was first published by Ann Welch OBE some 10 years before her death in 2002. ‘The Bold and The Old’ is a perceptive overview of pilot training at either end of the age spectrum and is as valid today as when it was written.

The Gremline Forum publishes regular news items from the UK Civil Aviation Authority along with notifications of updates to our tables containing listings of UK airfields that have waived charges for genuine emergency diversions.
